So what exactly is Torrent?

I don’t believe much in writing a long boring article where its not necessary. Articles become difficult to understand at times, especially when it is about some technical stuff. Watch the video bellow, it explains it all.

Important Note: Please do not download any Torrent files that contain content protected by the Copyright Act. All the files demonstrated in the above video abide with the Copyright Act.

Can I get sued for downloading Torrents?

HELL NO. You cannot be sued just for downloading a torrent. It is completely legal to download torrents in any part of the world including the US. It’s just that we all have to keep away from the torrents that contain content that is protected by the copyright law, and we should not download something without its owners permission. If you get caught downloading something that is protected by copyright law or without the owner’s permission, then YES you can be sued and there is a good chance of you getting some jail time too. It’s even OK to download a torrent if you have paid for such a service and you have the receipt for it. Much of the content on the Internet is not protected by the Copyright Act as it is not cheap to get obtain copyright protection, so you are more then welcome to download something like that.

The US Copyright Act protects the legal ownership of specific content to its creator. The Copyright Act can penalize anyone caught in violation of its provisions. Anyone found guilty may have to pay for the other party’s attorneys fees, plus he/she can face potential criminal sanctions including fines between $600 and $40,000. In May, 2011 big movie release companies like “Recording Industry Association of America” RIAA filed law suites against more then 22,000 individuals in the US for downloading the movie “The Expendables” illegally via torrents.

There is ongoing lively discussions regarding these issues. The bottom line is simply — be careful what you download. Many content producers themselves provide content free of cost to the general public while they make money by the advertisement delivered through that content. If you simply abide by simple common sense you will have no problems and enjoy lots of free legal torrents.

Seeders, Leechers, Peers and Trackers

What are Seeder, Leechers, Peers and Trackers? All these three (other then trackers)  just explains the type of people using torrents. These words appear all the time in a torrent client and on the websites from where you get a torrent download. These four things completes a torrent process. Each one of them have significant value to make it possible to share a file. As explained in the video about the torrent on this site. Torrent technology makes it possible to upload and download at the same time. Most of you will wonder where you will download and to where you will upload? Not to get confused. Its all done automatically by the torrent file it self. Torrent file is all about P2P sharing (PEER 2 PEER) which means it connects different computers at one time for sharing the data and the torrent file make sure to distribute the required data equally to everyone whether they are downloading or uploading it.

Seeders:

Are the people who are uploading a file via torrent client.

Leechers:

Are the people downloading the file. That is why they are called leechers.

Peers:

These are the people who are no different then leechers but what makes them different is they are downloing right from your computer. You upload to the PEERS.

Trackers:

These are the FILES which contains all the information about the seeders and leechers and it helps in connecting different peers (computers) to each other acording to their downloading or uploading requirements.
